Best Universal Maintenance Tools for Mini Splits (That Actually Work)

Last Updated on May 24, 2025 by Chad Peterson

Many of my customers are thrilled when they realize how available these maintenance tools for mini splits are to the public. And I believe you will also.

Mini split systems are efficient, quiet, and compact. But like any HVAC equipment, they need regular maintenance to perform their best. The good news? You don’t need expensive brand-name accessories. These universal tools work with almost any mini split system — no matter the brand.

Complete Mini Split Cleaning Kit

This product is one of the best maintenance tools for mini splits, made specifically for cleaning the indoor head unit of a mini split. It solves one of the biggest problems created when cleaning a mini split head, and that’s protecting the wall around the head while cleaning.

If you’ve ever tried to clean the indoor coil, you know the mess it can make.

A mini split cleaning bag wraps around the indoor unit and funnels water into a bucket. It’s a simple tool that protects your walls, floor, and electronics during deep cleaning. You will only need to use it occasionally when your coils look dirty.

Foaming Coil Cleaners

Evaporator coils attract dust, pet hair, and even mold. Over time, this buildup chokes airflow and kills efficiency. You can see the evaporator coils underneath the filters on most mini split heads.

A no-rinse foaming coil cleaner helps break down grime and wash it away. Spray it over the accessible parts of the coil and the excess will naturally flow down and out of the drain. Always follow the label — some cleaners require rinsing.

It can be used with a cleaning bag for a complete maintenance routine. I have used several of these foaming sprays over the years with the no-rinse feature, and it’s really cool to watch the collected dust on the coil flow away down the drain.

Fin Combs and Coil Brushes

Outdoor units take a beating. The metal fins can bend from weather, yard tools, or animals. I use these maintenance tools for mini splits quite often. Recently, I helped my son move his AC unit away from the house and the covered patio to remove the noise from the sitting area. While reconnecting the unit to a new line set, I noticed the condenser coil was packed with dryer vent lint.

Fin combs and soft coil brushes help restore those fins so your system can breathe. Always go slow — you’re straightening, not scrubbing. The kit available through the button below has three of the tools I use as maintenance tools for mini splits on a regular basis.

The hardest part is usually accessing the coil to clean it. You will often have to get out your cordless drill and some attachments and remove some covers.

Trim-to-Fit Replacement Filters

These filters are not maintenance tools for mini splits, but if used correctly, they can prevent a lot of unnecessary maintenance.

Most mini splits come with thin, washable mesh filters. They’re easy to clean, and they do a fair job of collecting dust, but they eventually break or wear out. If you have trouble finding a direct replacement, you can purchase replacement filters that you can trim to fit your particular unit.

Note: This is an important tip. Adding a secondary filter layer is not officially supported by all manufacturers. Use only low-resistance material and monitor airflow.

Universal filter sheets can be trimmed to size and added in front of the factory filter. They improve dust capture without restricting airflow, as long as you don’t overdo it. Look for low-resistance material and check it monthly. If you see dust buildup, replace or rinse it.

Be sure to check sizes and make sure they cover the inlet of the heat pump head.

Drain Line Maintenance Tools

Clogged drain lines are one of the most common mini split problems.

A simple drain cleaning tool, like a vacuum adapter or pressurized blow-out bulb, helps flush out slime and gunk. Keeping the line clear prevents leaks and water damage.

Do this every few months if you live in a humid climate or use the system for cooling often. If left to itself to build mold and slime in the drain pan, the condensate line can plug up, causing water to drip down the wall.

I wrote an entire article addressing this problem and how to correct it. You can read it here.

Final Thoughts On Maintenance Tools For Mini Splits

Forget fancy filter names and brand-specific accessories, and don’t think you have to spend a lot of money on maintenance tools for mini splits.

What really helps a mini split last longer and run cleaner are simple tools like these — the kind that work with almost any system.

Add them to your toolkit and build a habit of routine care. Your system (and your power bill) will thank you.
